Teachers and Farm Bureau: Partners for Student Health

These Watauga County Schools teachers recently completed training on using “The Farmer Grows a Rainbow,” a kit with lessons and physical activities that help cover nutrition and fitness topics for elementary and middle school students.  The Watauga County Farm Bureau provided free kits for each PreK-eighth grade school and a brunch for each teacher participating in the training.

After School Program Engages Students, Supports Families
Parkway students Magali Turner (at left) and Nelson Burns (at right) spoke to the Board of Education about the benefits of attending the after school program at Parkway.  Trevor Owens, afterschool site director at Parkway, stands behind his students. Valle Crucis students Jordan Gainey (center) and Kamron Lantz (at right) addressed the Board about their good experiences in the Valle Crucis after school program.  Mariah Burne, after school site director for Valle Crucis, stands behind her students.
Pam Shirley, director of the after school and holiday/snowday programs for the Watauga County Schools, gave the Board an overview of the importance of the programs and an update on program changes and challenges. The program serves more than 250 students in the school system's eight prek-eighth grade schools. Casey Johnson (at podium), a former ASU volunteer tutor in the Parkway after school and now an employee at the site, spoke about how meaningful it is to work with students and how it has affected his life.  Speaking of his role as site director, Trevor Owens told the Board "Thank you for letting me live the dream."
